Weare police add long range rifles

Nearly two years after getting rid of long-range firearms amid scrutiny over a deadly officer-involved shooting, the Weare Police Department is reincorporating semi-automatic rifles into its arsenal, a move described as solely precautionary.

Police Chief Sean Kelly says the guns– six Bushmaster M4 patrol rifles– were donated last month by an anonymous benefactor who Kelly said wanted to ensure that the department is equipped to handle especially dangerous emergencies, such as those involving active shooters. Selectmen approved the donation at their Dec. 14 meeting.
