City of Concord – Sustainability

When most people hear the word “sustainability” (which occurs all the time), they usually think of climate change and the environment, however, that is only part of it.

In my mind, sustainability is really a way of thinking about community, the environment, and economic initiatives that enhance the viability of our local community both today and in the future. It is unique to most every community. And it is unique for each local government.

When you look at the economy you need to look at economic development initiatives, investments in capital projects, events and programming, park maintenance and improvements and our trail network to mention just a few items.

When you look at the environment we need to focus on energy and water conservation, the protection of open space and the viability of local farms, the use of renewable energy and carbon reduction, amongst many others.

And finally, looking at community, do we have the right amount and mix of affordable housing, citizen outreach and engagement on neighborhood issues, programs for seniors and children, again a sample of a long list of what is needed to address, what is community.

Simply put, sustainability is the ability of communities to consistently thrive over time as we make decisions to improve our community today without sacrificing our future.
