Rick Perry is the longest serving governor in Texas history–fourteen years from December 2000 to January 2015. While the national economy has been sluggish in recent years, Texas has been experiencing vibrant growth. Known as the Texas Miracle, this exceptional economic progress in the Lonestar State accounts for 25-33% of the job growth in the United States. Governor Perry outlined how the Texas model could be applied on a national level. First, government has to accept a limited role, less regulation and lower taxes. Second, job creators have to feel that there is an environment that is stable, predictable, and smart. Sensible regulations and a limits on litigation. The next incentive is accountable public schools which will provide a skilled work force. Perry is also proud that while the population of Texas grew 5.6 million, Texas lowered many of its environmental impact statistics. For instance, the carbon footprint of Texas decreased by 9% despite the increased population and economic activity. When he was asked what role the energy industry contributed to the economic boom, Governor Perry downplayed the oil industry’s role. He stated that the Texas economy had become more diverse with increases in manufacturing and technology. Texas has passed California as the number one technology exporting state.

When he was asked about his low poll numbers in New Hampshire, Governor Perry felt that he will need to spend more time in the Granite State in order to make the personal connections that are necessary to win in the primary. He believes that in 2016, the American people will want a president who has had experience as an executive. In a possible reference to Senators Cruz and Paul, Governor Perry believes that many voters will not want to go with a one term senator like Barack Obama again. Perry also contrasted how he took decisive action to handle the Ebola outbreak by appointing medical professionals. President Obama after an extended period of time appointed a political operative to quell the criticism.

The final segment was about Texas culture. Chris gave the governor a choice of going to only one of three musical acts from Texas–George Strait, Willie Nelson, or ZZ Top. After a discussion of other Texas musical acts, Governor Perry explained that he once played drums with ZZ Top.
