NH Now: Dr. Ben Carson Says that Voters Should Not Confuse Bombast and Volume with Strength

During his trip to New Hampshire, GOP Presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson took some time to talk to Chris Ryan about the state of the presidential race, the relationship of the Republican Party and the African-American community, and the decline of the middle class. Like many observers of the political scene, Carson believes that this election cycle is like no other. For that reason, he isn’t too worried about his recent decline in the polls. He accepts that discussion of discrepancies in his biography and fears about terrorism have taken their toll on his popularity. Dr. Carson acknowledges that Trump’s celebrity is a wild card that cannot be underestimated in analysis of this race. As people have become worried about the rise of terrorism, Trump’s approval numbers have risen and the soft spoken pediatric neurosurgeon’s numbers have fallen. Carson cautioned people that we should measure a person’s strength by what he has accomplished in life.

Dr. Carson also offered some analysis of our country’s economic woes. He believes that our problems of wage stagnation and the decline of the middle class are the result of pressures caused by our ever growing national debt. The conversation then turned to Ben Carson’s unique perspective on how the Republican Party could do a better job of gaining votes in the African-American community. He discussed how the Republican Party was at one time the party which had been most supportive of African-Americans. However, Dr. Carson said that the Republican party is about self help and the Democrat Party is the party of largesse. The War on Poverty programs which were begun in the 1960s pulled African-American voters to the Democrats. Carson also blames many of the social and economic problems which have beset that community on the dependency which this well intentioned program has caused.

One innovation that Dr. Carson has offered which would involve bringing back $2.1 trillion dollars in profits held overseas by American corporations in order to avid our high corporate taxes. There would be a six month tax hiatus. However, Carson would require that 10% of the money must be spent in enterprise zones. This would create jobs for people who are on welfare or unemployed. Dr. Carson believes that US corporations would have an opportunity to invest in their fellow Americans.
